A flipbook is a way to lay out frames of an animation in a grid to allow playback of the animation by just animating the uvcoordinates of the texturesampler. The name comes from actual flipbooks where all the frames are stacked on top of eachother and you flip through them with your thumb, tricking the eye into seeing an animation instead of still images.
